The 2018 vintage of the wines of the Denomination of Origin León have been rated “excellent” by the tasting committee, after evaluating ten wines, three of them white of the variety Albarín, and four rosés and three red wines of Prieto Picudo . Since the establishment in 2007 of the Regulatory Council, the wines from the production area of ​​the south of the province had been rated “good” in 2013, “excellent” in 2014 and 2015 and “very good” for the other eight vintages

To the official reading of the qualification made after the tasting, which was held on the terrace of the hotel Camarote Romántico, the urban environment of the capital where the Blancomántico campaign is carried out until Sunday, which encourages the consumption of white wine from the Albarín variety and wine tourism promotion, attended by the Minister of Development and Environment of the Junta de Castilla y León, and occasionally the position of Agriculture and Livestock, Juan Carlos Suárez-Quiñones, the mayor of the city, Antonio Silván, and the president of the deputation, Juan Martínez Majo. The minutes were read by José Peñín, founder of the Peñín Guide, journalist and wine critic of international prestige, who did it on behalf of a tasting committee made up of the technical directors of the Rioja Origin denominations (Pablo Franco) , Ribera del Duero (Agustín Alonso) and Bierzo (Carmen Gómez), the chefs Juanjo Pérez (Cocinandos restaurant), Amparo Rodríguez (Los Poinos) and Javier Rodríguez (Delirios), the winemakers Rafael Alonso and Francis Giganto, the president of the Association Provincial Hotel and Tourism Businessmen, Martín Méndez, sommelier Fito Benéitez, president of Asle, and Ramón Villa, president of the Leonese Academy of Gastronomy.

The good weather conditions of the vegetative process and under which the 2018 vintage developed, which began on September 18 and ended on October 29, led to the production of high quality wines. The extraordinary sanitary conditions of the grape, together with the homogeneous development of the ripening process, allow the wineries to bring to market white and rosé wines, very aromatic and fresh, with great balances between alcohol and acidity in the mouth and very attractive colors. With regard to reds, the vintage offers great oenological possibilities, both in the case of young wines and those that the wineries have destined to aging, also with extraordinary parameters of alcohol, acidity and tannins.
