Whites, rosés and reds from the Vile La Finca, Vitis Velado, Señorío de los Arcos and Melgarajo wineries add seven new gold medals and twelve silver medals in the international competition
In a season especially rich in awards in the main international competitions for wines certified by the Regulatory Council, the record of the Denomination of Origin León adds another nineteen prestigious recognitions and now brings the medals won to 69. the moment, in the absence of knowing the results of the cross-border contest Vinduero-Vindouro.
An extraordinary contribution to this record has just been made by one of the competitions with the highest participation rate and one of the most important in England: theInternational Wine & Spirits Awardsawarded seven gold and twelve silver medals to the wines from the wine production area in the south of the province. The highest recognition was achieved by the whites of the Albarín Havequín 2021 variety fermented in barrels and Albaricus 2023, both made by Vitis Velado, and the Vega Carriegos 2023, from the Señorío de los Arcos winery; the rosé Don Suero 2019, from Vile La Finca, and the reds Melgus Reserva 2015 and Valdeleña Vino de Autor 2015, both from Melgarajo, and the Galgo Negro Crianza 2019, again from Vitis Velado, all of them from the native Prieto variety Weevil.
In the silver medal table, the same wineries repeat: Vile La Finca does so with the albarín Valjunco 2022, the rosé Valjunco 2023 and the red strong>Don Suero Roble 2022; Vitis Velado with the Canalla Rosé 2023; Señorío de los Arcos with the rosés El Carriego 2023 and Vegacarriegos 2023, and the reds El Carriego Roble 2021, Vegacarriegos Roble 2021 and Vegacarriegos Crianza 2014, and Melgarajo with the white of Verdejo Valdeleña 2023, the rosé Valdeleña 2023 and the red wine Melgus Crianza from the 2015 vintage.
The forty-nine high international recognitions previously achieved in the major wine competitions —Catavinum World Wine&Spirits Competition, Atlantic, Vinespaña, the two sections of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, Concours International de Lyon, Premios Casino de Madrid, International Virtus of Lisbon, Ecovino, Premios Baco and Decanter WWA— also confirm the excellent organoleptic qualities of the vinifications of the reference native varieties of the Denomination of Origin León. They were later joined by the great gold for Gurdos, from Gordonzello, in the Small DOs Competition, being the only rosé with that distinction. among the seven wines that reached it. The nineteen medals now received at the IWSC 2024 bring to 69 the high recognitions achieved this season by wines certified by the DO León.
TheInternational Wine & Spirits Awards is organized and developed by Catavinum in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain) and this year received thousands of entries from all over the world. More than 120 international judges, including around twenty masters of wine and a dozen master sommeliers, were part of the tasting panel, made up of 57% off-trade buyers from major UK retailers, 26% in-trade buyers the bar and restaurant trade, 6% of journalists and wine trainers. The objectives of the contest are to promote the production and elaboration of high quality wines, encouraging innovation and continuous improvement in the industry, promoting the dissemination of excellent products and encouraging responsible alcohol consumption.
